PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) – HAIR LOSS AND REJUVENATION TREATMENT

PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

BLOOD DRAW PREPARATION
Please drink plenty of fluids and water the day before and the day of your procedure. If you
are dehydrated, it is much harder to draw your blood, and you will not have as much plasma.
THINGS TO AVOID
Many prescribed and nonprescribed (OTC) medication, alcohol, and tobacco can decrease the
effectiveness of your PRP treatment and increase side effects.

  • Avoid NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Advil, Excedrin, Celebrex, Midol, Indomethacin, Ketorolac, Diclofenac,

Meloxicam, Aleve, Motrin, Naproxen, aspirin, and so on) for 7 days prior to your treatment and not
resumed for 7 days after treatment. NSAIDs increase bleeding and bruising risk. Send me a
message if you are unsure you are taking any NSAIDS. It is OK to take Tylenol (acetaminophen) as
instructed on the package prior to your treatment as this does not thin your blood. NSAIDS block the
action of your PRP growth factors, making your treatment less effective. Please consult with your
primary physician prior to discontinuing any medications.

  • Please stop blood thinning herbal supplements 7 days prior (including St. John’s Wort, Garlic,

Vitamin E, Gingko, etc). Biotin based supplements DO NOT need to be discontinued.

  • Corticosteroids, anti-coagulants, and blood thinners. If you are on these medications, you are not a

good candidate for PRP treatments and should not have PRP treatments. The most common of
these medications are Prednisone, Methylprednisolone, Prednisolone, Plavix, Dexamethasone,
Coumadin (Warfarin), Lovenox, Pradaxa, Eliquis, Heparin, Xarelto, and many more. Send me a
message if you are unsure you are taking one.

  • Avoid alcohol 3 days prior to decrease bleeding and bruising. Chronic or

excessive alcohol users’ ability to heal is not optimal, and PRP treatments may not be effective.
Tobacco use greatly impairs healing, and PRP treatments may not be effective.

HAIR COLOR – You can have your hair chemically treated, colored or bleached, up to 4 days
before your PRP treatment.
THE ACTUAL PRP TREATMENT DAY

  • Please arrive on time, so you will give me time to get you started on your intake forms and apply the

       numbing cream when applicable.

  • Please come with clean dry hair without any products on your scalp or hair.

  • You will need to reschedule your PRP treatment 48 hours prior to your appointment if you have any

rash or active infection on your scalp, neck, or face until 2 weeks after resolution.

POST TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR PRP TREATMENT
Swelling, redness, bleeding, tenderness, bruising, tingling, numbness, lumpiness, and/or feelings of
pressure or fullness at the injection site(s) and/or in the treated area(s) are the most common
temporary side effects and typically last 2 to 48 hours up to 72 hours. The remaining numbness
should resolve in a few hours. If you have progressing swelling, discharge, redness at the injection
sites or fever, contact me immediately as this could be an infection.
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR TREATED AREA

  • Be gentle. You can wash your scalp/ hair 24 hours after treatment with your regular hair

       products.

  • Avoid direct high heat (blow dryer, sun exposure, sauna, steam room, very hot shower, hot Yoga,

strenuous exercise, etc) for 24 hours after treatment.

  • You may apply small ice packs for 20 minutes every 2-3 hours to your scalp after your PRP

treatment to decrease swelling. You can continue this for the first 24 hours as desired.

  • Do not expose the treated area to chlorinated water for 48 hours after treatment (pools, hot tubs).

  • Avoid NSAIDs (ibuprofen, Aleve, naproxen, aspirin) the day of your procedure and 7 days after your

PRP treatment, these medications interfere with the treatment making it less effective and increasing your bruising/bleeding             risk. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner without your primary care provider's clearance.

  • If you experience discomfort, you can use ice or take Tylenol as directed in its package.

  • Do not drink alcohol for at least 3 days after treatment to decrease bruising/bleeding and improve

       healing and hence results.

  • Avoid sun exposure to your scalp for at least 2 weeks. Always wear protective clothing (hat with a

large brim, umbrella). The sun causes damage to your skin, even with 1 minute or 2 of exposure,
making your PRP treatment results less effective. It can also cause discoloration of the treated areas
       that may be permanent.

  • Do not have any treatments done to your scalp or hair for 3 days after your PRP treatment, such as

       chemical treatment (bleach and/or color).

  • If you are using minoxidil, Rogaine, or similar products, you can resume use in 24 hours.

***MOST PATIENTS NEED MULTIPLE treatments to achieve optimal results and will require
maintenance treatments to fight the nonstop aging progression and hair thinning/loss.
Remember that your body requires time to rebuild the treated area tissue, and while some patients
might see the results after a few weeks, others may need months to see results. It is possible that
some patients will not see any results from the recommended series of treatment, and this is
unpredictable.
